Becoming familiar with transit is a great skill to learn whether you here in Rupert, down in VanCity or living in PG. When you take the bus to school in the morning, stop by the office and tell Ms. Margaret that you took the bus. She will write your name down and you will get credit in Careers. ~ Careers & Monday Morning Assignments ~On Thursday of last week Mr. Janz had the opportunity to learn about Fire Extinguishers, different types of fires and how they interact. He even got to use a Fire Extinguisher to put out a fire (video below). For Monday Morning we are going to go over types of fires and Fire Extinguishers. If you remember anything, it's that bad things can happen when you don't know what you are doing. Check out this video of two workers putting water onto a kitchen grease fire:www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFQkFmanslEHere is a slow-motion of the fire / oil / water reaction:www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSkLeB46RS8Why does water in and oil fire explode? I thought water was the opposite of fire. The issue is not the water and fire but the water and oil. Oil burns at VERY high temperatures. Vegetable oil smoke point is about 230°C (450°F). Water's boil point is 100°C (212°F). Additionally, water is heavier than oil. When you combine this essentially what happens in the following:1. Water and oil are opposites and with water being heavier it sinks below the oil2. Water becomes instantly superheated to boil point3. Water expands and evaporates rapidly spraying/pushing/exploding the oil up and out.4. Little droplets of oil spray out and combust instantly. This is an example of why it is good to understand what makes a fire work and how you can stop a fire. The first step in crisis is: DO NOT PANIC! Below is a document Mr. Janz created to help you understand fires and Fire Extinguishers. pcs.rupertschools.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/PCS-Fire-Safety.pdfBelow is Mr. Janz demonstrating how to use a Fire Extinguisher:pcs.rupertschools.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/IMG_1032.mov~*~*~ Questions ~*~*~1. What are the following types of fires: A / B / C / K?2. Why is it important to know what kind of fire you have?3. What is the acronym PASS stand for with Fire Extinguishers?4. Why should you never put water on a grease fire? ... See MoreSee Less
